Informational Books

Young children are curious, eager learners.  They want to know more about the world around them and how things work in that world.  Informational, or non-fiction books, are those that provide factual information about topics that the child might have a natural interest in.  The writing should be clear and simple, with bright, colorful illustrations or photographs.

Informational books that will encourage your pre-reader’s curiosity:

An Island Grows by Lola M. Schaefer
Where there once was only water, an island begins to grow, and grow, and grow, until it is a busy place full of people and activity.

Somewhere in the World Right Now by Stacey Schuett
This story takes the reader around the world in a day.  What is happening in Kenya when you are going to sleep?

A Fruit is a Suitcase for Seeds by Jean Richards
Seeds – what they are for and how they grow – are introduced to young children in a clever, yet simple and easy-to-understand way.

A Log’s Life by Wendy Pfeffer
Young children will enjoy watching the life cycle of an oak tree unfold before them, learning of the many creatures that inhabit the tree, both in its life and in its decay.

If You Find a Rock by Peggy Christian
The text and photographs capture the wonder and fascination with which children view rocks.
